Often called <\/span><b>the \u2018Roman Pompeii\u2019<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the archaeological site is an example of a working-class Roman town.\u00a0 Ostia Antica is often missed by tourists as it is not as well-known as <\/span><b>Pompeii<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>Herculaneum <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or <\/span><b>Ephesus <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">but wandering through the paved streets, apartment blocks and warehouses towering above give a wonderful impression and allow the visitor to imagine the lives of the civilization that once thrived here.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The main port of Rome in the beginning of the empire, it was here that goods arrived from all over the Roman world; from grain, oil and wine to more precious luxury items<\/span><b>.\u00a0 During ancient times the city was a thriving hub of activity<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> supporting the city of Rome for around three hundred years.\u00a0 After Rome\u2019s collapse, it was abandoned, silted over and is in an extraordinary state of preservation.\u00a0 <\/span><b>Today visitors can explore the town and get a glimpse of how ordinary ancient Romans lived.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0 The ruins are nestled among pine trees and offer a welcome break from the hustle and bustle of the city of Rome.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"vc_row wpb_row vc_row-fluid spcl-padding\"><div class=\"about container wpb_column vc_column_container vc_col-sm-12\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\"><div class=\"vc_row wpb_row vc_inner vc_row-fluid\"><div class=\"wpb_column vc_column_container vc_col-sm-6\" id=\"imageDesktopRem79\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner vc_custom_1602940263270\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t<div  class=\"wpb_single_image wpb_content_element vc_align_left\">\n\t\t\n\t\t<figure class=\"wpb_wrapper vc_figure\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"vc_single_image-wrapper   vc_box_border_grey\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"vc_single_image-img\" src=\"https:\/\/colosseum.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/baths-of-neptune-500x500.jpg\" width=\"500\" height=\"500\" alt=\"baths-of-neptune\" title=\"baths-of-neptune\" \/><\/div>\n\t\t<\/figure>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"wpb_column vc_column_container vc_col-sm-6\" id=\"removeLeftMonPadB\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner vc_custom_1602917963628\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Highlights of the site are undoubtedly the <\/span><b>Baths of Neptune<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, where from a raised platform you can see the monochrome mosaics of Neptune in his chariot and in the room beside him, his partner Amphitrite.\u00a0 The <\/span><b>Theatre<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is truly impressive and is in excellent condition \u2013 it is still used today for modern performances; the only part missing is the grand stage building.\u00a0 Beside the theatre the huge square known as the <\/span><b>Piazza of the Corporations<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is surrounded by offices used by different shipping traders and businesses, the mosaics reflect the type of trade or the location they shipped to.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><!-- Row Backgrounds --><div class=\"upb_color\" data-bg-override=\"0\" data-bg-color=\"#ededed\" data-fadeout=\"\" data-fadeout-percentage=\"30\" data-parallax-content=\"\" data-parallax-content-sense=\"30\" data-row-effect-mobile-disable=\"true\" data-img-parallax-mobile-disable=\"true\" data-rtl=\"false\"  data-custom-vc-row=\"\"  data-vc=\"5.5.2\"  data-is_old_vc=\"\"  data-theme-support=\"\"   data-overlay=\"false\" data-overlay-color=\"\" data-overlay-pattern=\"\" data-overlay-pattern-opacity=\"\" data-overlay-pattern-size=\"\"    ><\/div><div class=\"vc_row wpb_row vc_row-fluid spcl-padding\"><div class=\"about container wpb_column vc_column_container vc_col-sm-12\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\"><div id=\"imageDesktopRem79\" class=\"vc_row wpb_row vc_inner vc_row-fluid\"><div class=\"wpb_column vc_column_container vc_col-sm-6\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner vc_custom_1589958084470\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The main street of Ostia Antica leads visitors past remains of shopping arcades, public baths, apartment blocks and warehouses. Unlike Pompeii, the buildings in Ostia rise to three or four levels and offer a glimpse of daily life in the shops and bars \u2013 particularly the <\/span><b>Thermopolium<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or tavern with its street front bar with containers that would have been filled with food or drink.\u00a0 The well-preserved <\/span><b>Bakery<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> where we can still see the millstones for grinding flour and the ovens where bread was baked. \u00a0 At the centre of the town is the Forum, with the <\/span><b>Capitoline temple<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which still towers above the other buildings.\u00a0 Beside this are the remains of a huge complex of public baths, known as the <\/span><b>Forum Baths<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with the <\/span><b>best-preserved public toilet in Europe<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">!<\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"wpb_column vc_column_container vc_col-sm-6\" id=\"removeLeftMonPad\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner vc_custom_1602917969322\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t<div  class=\"wpb_single_image wpb_content_element vc_align_left\">\n\t\t\n\t\t<figure class=\"wpb_wrapper vc_figure\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"vc_single_image-wrapper   vc_box_border_grey\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"vc_single_image-img\" src=\"https:\/\/colosseum.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/OSTIA-THEATRE-500x440.jpg\" width=\"500\" height=\"440\" alt=\"OSTIA THEATRE\" title=\"OSTIA THEATRE\" \/><\/div>\n\t\t<\/figure>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<p><b>The extensive grounds of the archaeological site offer a rare glimpse of an ancient Roman town.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0 There are no coloured frescoes like in Pompeii, but there are plenty of black and white mosaics which remind us this was a working port town, there were wealthy traders and businessmen living in Ostia, but the coloured mosaics from their houses are no longer here;
