Money that was once spent on entertaining the citizens of Rome and keeping the Colosseum in good repair was instead needed to defend the empire. The last recorded games were animal hunts held in 523 AD, after this the colosseum fell into disuse.\u00a0 Nature also played a part in the decline of the Colosseum; fires, lightning and earthquakes all contributed to the its state of disrepair.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During the dark ages anything that could be reused was plundered from the Colosseum.\u00a0 Marble seating and veneer that once lined the inner corridors used by the wealthy were ripped off.\u00a0 Statues in marble and bronze and the huge marble columns and capitals that once decorated the ground floor entrance hall were carried away.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"wpb_column vc_column_container vc_col-sm-6\" id=\"removeLeftMonPad\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t<div  class=\"wpb_single_image wpb_content_element vc_align_left\">\n\t\t\n\t\t<figure class=\"wpb_wrapper vc_figure\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"vc_single_image-wrapper   vc_box_border_grey\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"vc_single_image-img\" src=\"https:\/\/colosseum.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/shutterstock_686606548-scaled-500x500.jpg\" width=\"500\" height=\"500\" alt=\"shutterstock_686606548\" title=\"shutterstock_686606548\" \/><\/div>\n\t\t<\/figure>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"wpb_column vc_column_container vc_col-sm-12\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Visitors often ask \u201cwhat are the holes on the front of the colosseum?\u201d These holes were left after the iron clamps that once held the huge travertine blocks together were removed and recycled.\u00a0 Without the clamps holding the masonry together, huge parts of the building collapsed when numerous earthquakes shook Rome in the Middle Ages..\u00a0 As the outer rings fell with successive earthquakes they were auctioned off to the highest bidder and used to build bridges, churches and palaces including <\/span><b>St Peter\u2019s Basilica<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and Palazzo Madama.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><!-- Row Backgrounds --><div class=\"upb_color\" data-bg-override=\"0\" data-bg-color=\"\" data-fadeout=\"\" data-fadeout-percentage=\"30\" data-parallax-content=\"\" data-parallax-content-sense=\"30\" data-row-effect-mobile-disable=\"true\" data-img-parallax-mobile-disable=\"true\" data-rtl=\"false\"  data-custom-vc-row=\"\"  data-vc=\"5.5.2\"  data-is_old_vc=\"\"  data-theme-support=\"\"   data-overlay=\"false\" data-overlay-color=\"\" data-overlay-pattern=\"\" data-overlay-pattern-opacity=\"\" data-overlay-pattern-size=\"\"    ><\/div><div class=\"vc_row wpb_row vc_row-fluid vc_custom_1602924539578\"><div class=\"wpb_column vc_column_container vc_col-sm-12\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"about\">\n<h4>The pope saves the Colosseum<\/h4>\n<hr \/>\n<\/div>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<p>It\u2019s bloody history long forgotten, the Colosseum had multiple uses throughout history: the arena was filled up and used as a cemetery, the outer corridors were used as housing units, it was even fortified in places and used as a castle in the 13th century. There is evidence of workshops and shops including a tailor\u2019s shop, bakers and cheesemakers. By the sixteenth century, altars were set up around the inside of the arena for the stations of the holy cross and numerous small chapels were built.<\/p>\n<p>Finally at the end of the 18th century it was saved from further destruction by the Pope, by this time the outer arches were filled with rubbish and another earthquake threatened what remained of the outer ring. It was in the early 1800s that restorative work was done to bolster and protect the two ends of the last ring with brickwork, completed by the architects Valadier and Stern. By this time it had become a tourist attraction during the \u2018Grand Tour\u2019 of the 19th Century.
