{"id":1185,"date":"2020-06-10T10:47:16","date_gmt":"2020-06-10T10:47:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/colosseum.info\/?page_id=1185"},"modified":"2020-10-18T03:50:15","modified_gmt":"2020-10-18T03:50:15","slug":"lupercal","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/colosseum.info\/es\/lupercal\/","title":{"rendered":"Lupercal"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"vc_row wpb_row vc_row-fluid spcl-padding notopP\"><div class=\"about container wpb_column vc_column_container vc_col-sm-12\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner \"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\"><div class=\"vc_row wpb_row vc_inner vc_row-fluid\"><div class=\"wpb_column vc_column_container vc_col-sm-6\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner \"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element \" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"about\">\n<h4>The Lupercal<\/h4>\n<hr \/>\n<\/div>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element \" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>Lupercal<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (from Latin <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lupa<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8220;female wolf) was a cave at the southwest foot of the Palatine Hill in located somewhere near the temple of Magna Mater.\u00a0 According to legend this is where <\/span><b>Romulus and Remus were taken and suckled the she-wolf. Th<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">e foundation of Rome is steeped in legend and the difficulty for historians and archaeologists is to try to find evidence to support the past.\u00a0 Whilst to us today the idea of a she-wolf suckling human babies is far-fetched, the Romans clearly believed this myth and kept the \u2018Lupercal\u2019 cave as a sacred shrine.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Lupercal Cave was the site of the <\/span><b>Lupercalia<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a Roman festival celebrated annually on the 15th of February. The priests of Faunus, known as the <\/span><b><i>Luperci<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, sacrificed animals in the cave, the skins of the slain animals would be made into straps which would be used by the priests who ran through the city of Rome striking those they passed. This appears to have been a fertility ritual, it was thought that being struck with the skin of a goat would help women who were trying to conceive. The Luperci, the priests of Faunus, celebrated ceremonies of the <\/span><b>Lupercalia <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">at the cave, from the earliest days of the City until at least 494 AD.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"imageDesktopAdd79 wpb_column vc_column_container vc_col-sm-6\" id=\"removeLeftMonPadB\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"about\">\n<h4>Finding the Lupercal<\/h4>\n<hr \/>\n<\/div>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element \" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2007 a vaulted chamber was discovered under the hill by Italian archaeologists, close to the ruins of the House of Augustus.\u00a0 The chamber was 16m underground, in an area previously unexplored.\u00a0 Archaeologists used laser scanners, endoscopes and camera probes to investigate the space for fear it might collapse.\u00a0 The circular structure measuring 7.5m in diameter and 8m high was plastered and beautifully decorated with coloured marble, mosaics, shells and white eagle at the centre.
