{"id":1238,"date":"2020-06-10T11:57:55","date_gmt":"2020-06-10T11:57:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/colosseum.info\/?page_id=1238"},"modified":"2020-10-18T02:35:00","modified_gmt":"2020-10-18T02:35:00","slug":"temple-of-venus-and-rome","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/colosseum.info\/es\/temple-of-venus-and-rome\/","title":{"rendered":"TEMPLO DE VENUS Y ROMA"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"vc_row wpb_row vc_row-fluid spcl-padding notopP\"><div class=\"about container wpb_column vc_column_container vc_col-sm-12\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\"><div class=\"vc_row wpb_row vc_inner vc_row-fluid\"><div class=\"wpb_column vc_column_container vc_col-sm-12\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"about\">\n<h4>TEMPLO DE VENUS Y ROMA<\/h4>\n<hr \/>\n<\/div>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What remains of ancient Rome\u2019s largest-known temple, <\/span><b>the Temple of Venus and Rome<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, stands next to the Colosseum, one of the most impressive remains on the Roman Forum.\u00a0 Built by the Emperor Hadrian and dedicated to Venus and Roma, it stood atop a high platform where the entrance to Nero\u2019s <\/span><b>Domus Aurea (ARome\/DomusSurea)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> once stood.\u00a0 In order to build the temple, Hadrian had to move the 30m colossus of Nero to a base next to the Flavian amphitheatre.\u00a0 This magnificent back to back double temple was the first to glorify the goddess Roma in her own right.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The emperor Hadrian designed it himself (he was an amateur architect) who had a passion for grand architecture built and restored monuments wherever he went.\u00a0 Taking the place of the monumental entrance of Nero\u2019s palace, the temple was a Greek style temple with a low stepped podium with ten columns at each end and twenty columns down the sides.\u00a0 The 60ft Corinthian column of white proconnesian marble would make the temple roof level with the bell tower of S. Francesca Romana \u2013 towering above the <\/span><b>Colosseum (COLOSSEUMTAB)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0 Set in a paved square it was flanked by a colonnaded portico of grey granite columns, <\/span><b>the precinct covers an area of 1.5 acres and was essentially Hadrian\u2019s Forum<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, providing a monumental route between the old Roman Forum valley and the amphitheatre, the colonnA.D.es along the sides ended in steps which led down to the colosseum level.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"vc_row wpb_row vc_row-fluid spcl-padding\"><div class=\"about container wpb_column vc_column_container vc_col-sm-12\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\"><div id=\"imageDesktopRem79\" class=\"vc_row wpb_row vc_inner vc_row-fluid\"><div class=\"wpb_column vc_column_container vc_col-sm-6\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The double temple consisted of two main chambers housing its own cult statue; seated back to back on thrones, with Roma holding a spear and an image of victory facing west over the <\/span><b>Roman Forum<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and Venus holding a spear and a cupid faced the Colosseum to the east. The entrance to each chamber was lined with four columns and the entire temple was bordered with colonnaded entrances. Construction began in 121 A.D.; the temple was officially inaugurated in 135 A.D. What we see today is mostly the restoration by the emperor Maxentius after a fire in 307 A.D, he changed the style slightly and the colour scheme adding porphyry columns and veneer.\u00a0 The floor was paved in marble in geometric patterns much like the <\/span><b>Pantheon<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0 The eastern chamber,\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"wpb_column vc_column_container vc_col-sm-6\" id=\"removeLeftMonPad\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t<div  class=\"wpb_single_image wpb_content_element vc_align_left\">\n\t\t\n\t\t<figure class=\"wpb_wrapper vc_figure\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"vc_single_image-wrapper   vc_box_border_grey\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"vc_single_image-img\" src=\"https:\/\/colosseum.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/TEMPLE-VENUS-AND-ROMA-500x337.jpg\" width=\"500\" height=\"337\" alt=\"TEMPLE VENUS AND ROMA\" title=\"TEMPLE VENUS AND ROMA\" \/><\/div>\n\t\t<\/figure>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">visible from the piazza of the Colosseum, still retains the elegant apse and original columns that were unearthed and put back in place by Mussolini.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The temple honoured <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Roma Aeterna<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Eternal Rome) protector of the state and the city and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Venus Felix<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a previously unknown Goddess of fertility and prosperity.\u00a0 In 176 A.D. an altar was erected at which all newly married couples were expected to sacrifice.\u00a0 These newly glorified deities represented the golden age of Rome beginning with Trajan which <\/span><b>stressed the power of Rome and the Empire rather than the emperors.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It remained one of the most enduring of Rome\u2019s pagan temples frequented for its festival to the <\/span><b>birthday of Rome on 21<\/b><b>st<\/b><b> April<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, even by Christians in the 5<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> century.\u00a0 In the 7<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> century the bronze was removed from the roof and in the 8<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> century the temple of Roma side was converted into a church today called S Francesca Romana.\u00a0 Today the Temple of Venus and Rome is one of the <\/span><b>most impressive ruins<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the Roman Forum.
