When one refers to the Vatican, it is generally understood to include the Sistine Chapel (located inside the museum) and Saint Peter\u2019s Basilica (technically located next door, outside the Vatican walls).\u00a0 In fact, the walls delineate<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Vatican is one of the most visited sites in Rome for its three main attractions:\u00a0 The <\/span><b>Vatican Museums<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with one of the world\u2019s largest art collections, the <\/span><b>Sistine Capel<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with its famous decorations by Michelangelo and <\/span><b>St Peter\u2019s Basilica<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 he largest church in the world built on top of the bones of St Peter.\u00a0 Vatican City &#8211; the smallest country in the world at 0.2 square miles Some of the world\u2019s most treasured paintings, sculptures and frescoes lie within the Vatican style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is a former palace with a series of 1400 rooms, the hallways are sumptuously decorated with tapestries, candelabras, paintings, sculptures and frescoes. All of this represents the combined lifetime collections of the popes from the 16<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> century to the present and stretches as far back as ancient Egypt, Greece and Mesopotamia.\u00a0 Don\u2019t forget to look down as many of the rooms are decorated with original ancient Roman mosaics from Ostia Antica.\u00a0 With a staggering twenty two different galleries the Vatican boasts one of the largest collection of Renaissance art, ancient statuary and artefacts in the world; the most famous are probably the <\/span><b>Museo Pio-Clementino<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with its splendid classical sculpture including the <\/span><b>Laoco\u00f6n<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>Belvedere Torso<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that inspired the great Michelangelo; the <\/span><b>Raphael Rooms<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; entire rooms painted by Raphael including his \u2018<\/span><b>School of Athens\u2019<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; the <\/span><b>Pinacoteca<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (picture gallery) with medieval and renaissance paintings and of course the <\/span><b>Sistine Chapel<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once a completely separate chapel on the side of the hill, the <\/span><b>Sistine Chapel<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has to be the most famous part of the Vatican.\u00a0 This small, one-room chapel has become famous the world over for the genius of Michelangelo found in the frescoed walls and ceiling.\u00a0 Many do not realise it is more than just a decorated chapel, but the place where the <\/span><b>Conclave<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> happens \u2013 the <\/span><b>election for the new pope<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0 As you recover from the overwhelming beauty of the museums, prepare to be awestruck by the idealised frescoes of Michelangelo on the ceiling and the ominous <\/span><b>Last Judgement on the back wall<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the chapel.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The ceiling\u2019s frescoes capture stunning depictions of biblical scenes from the book of Genesis, as we gaze upwards scenes of the creation unfold before or eyes, of the universe, of Adam and Eve, their fall from grace and their descendants.\u00a0 Running along the side of the walls are scenes from the life of Moses and the life of Christ &#8211; the work of the\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"wpb_column Spanning the entire back wall is Michelangelo\u2019s dramatic <\/span><b>Last Judgment<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, painted over thirty years later.\u00a0 Its rich blue hue provides the backdrop for a swirling mass of characters&#8217; who are either saved or damned to hell.\u00a0 It is astonishing to think that Michelangelo only grudgingly painted the ceiling after being threatened by the pope.\u00a0 The ceiling took almost four years to complete, a feat that he claimed to have completed almost entirely alone and would complain bitterly about for the rest of his life.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"vc_row wpb_row vc_row-fluid spcl-padding\"><div class=\"about container wpb_column vc_column_container Basilica<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is usually the last stop for visitors at the Vatican, guided tours use a side door which allows direct access from the Sistine Chapel to the basilica.\u00a0 Saint Petr\u2019s Basilica is one of the most important papal Basilicas in Rome, built according to tradition upon the resting place of St Peter.\u00a0 It was here that Constantine, Rome\u2019s first Christian emperor built a basilica to celebrate Saint Peter.\u00a0 The church we visit today is the brainchild of Julius II the warrior pope who wanted to build the largest church in Christendom to put Rome back on the map.\u00a0 His church would take over twelve popes, eight different architects and one hundred and twenty years to complete but today it stands as the Jewel of all catholic churches.\u00a0 Michelangelo became the lead architect of Saint Peter\u2019s and designed the dome that can be seen from all over Rome, although he would never live to see it finished.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element \" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As you walk through the doors into the church you are struck by its immensity, the dome rises up over 136 metres in height and is the tallest building in Rome (by law no building can be higher) as well as being the largest church in the world.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><!-- Row Backgrounds --><div class=\"upb_color\" data-bg-override=\"0\" data-bg-color=\"#ededed\" data-fadeout=\"\" data-fadeout-percentage=\"30\" data-parallax-content=\"\" data-parallax-content-sense=\"30\" data-row-effect-mobile-disable=\"true\" class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As soon as you enter on the right you are greeted by Michelangelo\u2019s work yet again in the form of the virgin Mary holding the lifeless body of her adult son. \u2018The Sorrow\u2019 or \u2018La Pieta\u2019 is undoubtedly his most beautiful sculpture and the only one he ever signed.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Further along from the Pieta is the <\/span><b>grave of Pope John Paul II<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> one of the many popes buried in the basilica and in the grottoes below (accessed by a door under Saint Andrew).\u00a0 Don\u2019t miss the medieval bronze statue of <\/span><b>Saint Peter<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which once stood in the old basilica \u2013 notice his feet which have been rubbed away by countless thousands of pilgrims. \u00a0 As you explore the cavernous basilica, you will be drawn to the centre where you will find <\/span><b>Bernini\u2019s<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> extravagant twisting bronze canopy or <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Baldacchino<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that rises almost 100 feet above the papal altar.\u00a0 Its majestic proportions leave visitors awestruck, even more so when we realise the symmetry \u2013 the sepulchre of saint peter, the baldacchino the dome and the cross on top of the church are all perfectly aligned.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"wpb_column vc_column_container 400;\"> inside and out.\u00a0 Not for the faint hearted at 551 steps to the top (or 320 with the elevator), but the 360-degree panorama from the top is a once in a lifetime experience.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tickets are required for the Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel and should be booked in advance as the museums can be crowded in high season.\u00a0 Guided tours offer the highlights of the museums and the Sistine Chapel and usually include privileged access and an explanation of St Peter\u2019s Basilica.\u00a0
