{"id":767,"date":"2020-05-20T09:43:40","date_gmt":"2020-05-20T09:43:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/colosseum.info\/?page_id=767"},"modified":"2020-10-18T02:13:28","modified_gmt":"2020-10-18T02:13:28","slug":"roman-forum","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/colosseum.info\/es\/roman-forum\/","title":{"rendered":"FORO ROMANO"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"vc_row wpb_row vc_row-fluid spcl-padding notopP\"><div class=\"about container wpb_column vc_column_container vc_col-sm-12\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner \"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\"><div class=\"vc_row wpb_row vc_inner vc_row-fluid\"><div class=\"wpb_column vc_column_container vc_col-sm-6\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner \"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element \" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"about\">\n<h4><strong>ROMAN FORUM: THE HEART OF ANCIENT ROME<\/strong><\/h4>\n<hr \/>\n<\/div>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element \" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<p><b>BEGINNINGS<\/b><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Roman Forum (VISITCOL\/ROMAN FORUM<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is <\/span><b>home to ancient Rome\u2019s most important sites<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that can still be seen today.\u00a0 Walking through the monuments we are reminded that the city of Rome has seen over 3,000 years of history.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Long before the Roman Forum became the <\/span><b>heart of the ancient city<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, it was a marshy valley lying between several hills. \u00a0 The first construction in the time of the kings (around 600 BC) was a deep drain the <\/span><b>Cloaca Maxima<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with this they drained the swampy area diverting numerous streams which frequently flooded the area.\u00a0 This allowed the use of the valley and a large rectangular space was created and slowly converted into a public marketplace and meeting space. Rome wasn\u2019t built in a day they say, by the 500s BC the first buildings made of local stone and terracotta tiles were built.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"wpb_column vc_column_container vc_col-sm-6\" id=\"removeLeftMonPad\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner \"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t<div  class=\"wpb_single_image wpb_content_element vc_align_left\">\n\t\t\n\t\t<figure class=\"wpb_wrapper vc_figure\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"vc_single_image-wrapper   vc_box_border_grey\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"vc_single_image-img \" src=\"https:\/\/colosseum.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Roman-Forum--500x500.jpg\" width=\"500\" height=\"500\" alt=\"Roman Forum\" title=\"Roman Forum\" \/><\/div>\n\t\t<\/figure>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element \" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These first buildings were temples which were used not only for observance of the Gods, but civic functions too.\u00a0 As Rome entered the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Republic (ARome\/Republic)<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; a quasi-democracy with elected leaders and a system of senators, magistrates and officials who oversaw the management of the state. The <\/span><b><i>Basilica Aemilia<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b><i>Basilica Julia<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> flanking the Capitoline end of the Forum can still be seen in part today. Finally, a senate house appeared with the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">comitium<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in front of it &#8211; a meeting place for discussion before voting.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first temples on the Forum were those of <\/span><b>Saturn <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><b>Vesta (RForum\/TVesta)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with eight remaining columns the <\/span><b>Temple of Saturn<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a particularly striking sight. The small temple of Vesta we see today is a 20<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> century reconstruction.\u00a0 Many other temples were added over time to important Gods \u2013 the forum was also the place to take part in sacrifices and religious processions. By the end of the 1<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">st<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> century BC, Men started to become gods with the building of the <\/span><b>Temple of the deified Julius Caesar<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (only a stump of stone today) by Augustus in 29BC.\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element \" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Following this all emperors would be deified after death and temples were built to the emperors as Gods.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By the beginning of the 1<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">st<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> century AD few people lived on the forum as it had become the focus of daily life with bars, restaurants, brothels shops and markets.\u00a0 The few people to live on the Forum were the Vestal virgins who had an apartment complex attached to the temple and the house of the high priest the Regia.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><!-- Row Backgrounds --><div class=\"upb_color\" data-bg-override=\"0\" data-bg-color=\"#ededed\" data-fadeout=\"\" data-fadeout-percentage=\"30\" data-parallax-content=\"\" data-parallax-content-sense=\"30\" data-row-effect-mobile-disable=\"true\" data-img-parallax-mobile-disable=\"true\" data-rtl=\"false\"  data-custom-vc-row=\"\"  data-vc=\"5.5.2\"  data-is_old_vc=\"\"  data-theme-support=\"\"   data-overlay=\"false\" data-overlay-color=\"\" data-overlay-pattern=\"\" data-overlay-pattern-opacity=\"\" data-overlay-pattern-size=\"\"    ><\/div><div class=\"vc_row wpb_row vc_row-fluid spcl-padding\"><div class=\"about container wpb_column vc_column_container vc_col-sm-12\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner \"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\"><div class=\"vc_row wpb_row vc_inner vc_row-fluid\"><div class=\"wpb_column vc_column_container vc_col-sm-6\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner \"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element \" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"about\">\n<h4><strong>CENTRE OF AN EMPIRE<\/strong><\/h4>\n<hr \/>\n<\/div>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element \" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Roman Forum is also home to the <\/span><b>triumphal arches<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of both Titus and Septimius Severus &#8211; the former showing intricate representations from Titus\u2019 <\/span><b>Siege of Jerusalem<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in 70 AD and Septimius Severus\u2019 campaign in Parthia (modern Iran).\u00a0 Both arches show scenes of the triumphal parades that went through the forum to celebrate the subjugation od new territories. As well as the triumphal arches recording military victories, statues of important individuals were raised on columns on the rectangular paved square in the centre.\u00a0 Some of these still stand today (minus their statues).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The massive <\/span><b>Basilica of Maxentius<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a third of which dominates the upper part of the Forum was the largest new Basilica built in the 4<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> century.\u00a0 Finished by Constantine after he deposed Maxentius at the battle of Ponte Milvio, this courthouse and meeting hall would later be used for the design of the first churches. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">from senators to merchants and prostitutes &#8211; everyday life played out here. <\/span><b>The Via Sacra<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was used for religious parades, triumphant parades and state funerals &#8211; like that of <\/span><b>Julius Caesar, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">when throngs of Romans filled the forum to see his <\/span><b>funeral<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> parade after his assassination.\u00a0 To this day, flowers are still left at the remains of the Temple of the Deified Julius Caesar, even though the resting place of his ashes remains unknown.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"vc_row wpb_row vc_row-fluid spcl-padding\"><div class=\"about container wpb_column vc_column_container vc_col-sm-12\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner \"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\"><div class=\"vc_row wpb_row vc_inner vc_row-fluid\"><div class=\"wpb_column vc_column_container vc_col-sm-6\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner vc_custom_1602987145785\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t<div  class=\"wpb_single_image wpb_content_element vc_align_left\">\n\t\t\n\t\t<figure class=\"wpb_wrapper vc_figure\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"vc_single_image-wrapper   vc_box_border_grey\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"vc_single_image-img \" src=\"https:\/\/colosseum.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Campo-Vaccino-1636-1-500x500.jpg\" width=\"500\" height=\"500\" alt=\"Campo Vaccino 1636\" title=\"Campo Vaccino 1636\" \/><\/div>\n\t\t<\/figure>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"wpb_column vc_column_container vc_col-sm-6\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner \"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element \" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"about\">\n<h4><strong>THE COW FIELD<\/strong><\/h4>\n<hr \/>\n<\/div>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element \" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When Constantine left Rome in the 330s AD to build his new city I the east (Constantinople) the constant expansion and fervour of state buildings ended.\u00a0 Rome fell to the barbarians who during the 5<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> century came in waves sacking Rome over and over again, destroying and pillaging.\u00a0 Once the aqueducts were broken in the 6<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> century the town centre that had seen over a thousand years of use was abandoned.\u00a0 <\/span><b>The last monument erected on the forum was the column of Phocas in 609 AD<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A silent witness of Rome\u2019s turbulent past, the Roman Forum slowly decayed, earthquakes brought the buildings down, pillaging for marble left buildings in ruins and floods and vegetation filled the valley.\u00a0 The Forum lay under debris for centuries and became known as the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Campo Vaccino<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Cow field). Finally, in the early 19th century, the area was cleared by archaeologists and excavations began.
