{"id":828,"date":"2020-05-21T05:58:50","date_gmt":"2020-05-21T05:58:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/colosseum.info\/?page_id=828"},"modified":"2020-10-18T02:21:40","modified_gmt":"2020-10-18T02:21:40","slug":"interesting-facts-about-the-roman-forum","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/colosseum.info\/es\/interesting-facts-about-the-roman-forum\/","title":{"rendered":"DATOS CURIOSOS"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"vc_row wpb_row vc_row-fluid vc_custom_1602987424229\"><div class=\"wpb_column vc_column_container vc_col-sm-6\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"about\">\n<h4>\u00bfQU\u00c9 ES LA LAPIS NIGER?<\/h4>\n<hr \/>\n<\/div>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The area in front of the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Curia<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was once a paved area called the <\/span><b>Comitium <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">which by the 3<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rd<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> century BC had an arena shaped seating area, the tribunal, rostra and foreigner\u2019s gallery.\u00a0 \u00a0 These political buildings disappeared as Rome became an empire, but one curious \u2018ill-omened area\u2019 remains.\u00a0 In front of the <\/span><b>Arch of Septimius Severus<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, there is an irregular patch of bluish-grey limestone slabs which are lower than the surrounding travertine (marked off by a metal railing today).\u00a0 This is the <\/span><b><i>Lapis Niger<\/i><\/b><b>, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or<\/span><b> Black Stone<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is intriguing is what lies beneath!\u00a0 Excavations unearthed three monuments; an inscribed tufa block from the 6<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> century, an altar from the 4<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> century and a column base from the 3<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rd<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> century BC.\u00a0 These were all buried in the 1<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">st<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> century BC when the area was paved over and marked with the black stone.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"wpb_column vc_column_container vc_col-sm-6\" id=\"removeLeftMonPad\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner vc_custom_1602987698288\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t<div  class=\"wpb_single_image wpb_content_element vc_align_left\">\n\t\t\n\t\t<figure class=\"wpb_wrapper vc_figure\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"vc_single_image-wrapper   vc_box_border_grey\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"vc_single_image-img\" src=\"https:\/\/colosseum.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/lapis-niger-500x400.jpg\" width=\"500\" height=\"400\" alt=\"lapis niger\" title=\"lapis niger\" \/><\/div>\n\t\t<\/figure>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"wpb_column vc_column_container vc_col-sm-12\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The 6<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> century inscription is in very early Latin and scholars are still baffled as to the exact words; it clearly continued to be viewed as sacred.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"wpb_column vc_column_container vc_col-sm-12\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Who was Curtius? One story tells that he was a <\/span><b>Sabine Knight<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> who fell into a marsh when he was fighting <\/span><b>Romulus<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0 Another claims he was <\/span><b>a Roman Knight who sacrificed himself and his horse by leaping into a chasm<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that had appeared in the Roman Forum (see the relief found nearby and on display in the area).\u00a0 Another suggestion is that he was <\/span><b>Gaius Curtius, consul in 445 BC<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> who consecrated the site after it was hit by lightning.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><!-- Row Backgrounds --><div class=\"upb_color\" data-bg-override=\"0\" class=\"about\">\n<h4>SANTA MARIA ANTIQUA: LA IGLESIA CRISTIANA M\u00c1S ANTIGUA EN EXISTENCIA EST\u00c1 EN EL FORO ROMANO<\/h4>\n<hr \/>\n<\/div>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the base of the Palatine hill sits a building that was once part of a great hall connected to Domitian\u2019s monumental ramp up to his palace.\u00a0 Part of the hall was converted into what is called today <\/span><b>Santa Maria Antiqua, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">it is one of the few sites in Rome where we can see Byzantine Christian art.\u00a0 <\/span><b>This building is uniquely decorated with extraordinary early-Christian paintings dating back to the 560s AD<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0 The decorations include Old testament stories of Jacob and Joseph, images of the Saints Agnes and Cecilia and the so-called Oratory of the Forty Martyrs depicting 40 Christian soldiers who were martyred in Armenia in 303 AD.\u00a0 Later abandoned (probably after the earthquake of 847), in its short life it was richly endowed with marble and mosaic pavement and more rare frescoes in the 8<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> century.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"wpb_column vc_column_container vc_col-sm-6\" id=\"removeLeftMonPadB\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner\"><div style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Church of Santa Maria Antiqua has only recently re-opened after lengthy restoration and should not be missed for the incredible early-Christian artwork on display. FACT AND FICTION<\/h4>\n<hr \/>\n<\/div>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Julius Caesar is by far Ancient Rome\u2019s most popular historical figure and many visitors ask where he died and where his remains are.\u00a0 <\/span><b>Caesar was assassinated on the Ides of March (15<\/b><b>th<\/b><b>) 44BC as he attended a meeting of the Senate, stabbed 23 times by friends and colleagues.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Many assume this happened in the Roman Forum. This is an easy mistake, considering he was killed at a meeting of the senate &#8211; usually held in a building called the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Curia<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (senate house) in the forum.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the time of Caesar\u2019s death, this building was being restored (by Caesar) because of fire damage (it would be renamed Curia Julia).
