Nero came to power at the tender age of 17 after his adoptive father, the emperor Claudius, died suddenly (gossip at the time said Nero\u2019s mother, Agrippina, had a hand in this).\u00a0 Nero inherited a vast empire stretching from Britain to North Africa and France to Syria.\u00a0 Nero\u2019s mother Agrippina tried to dominate his early life and decisions but when Seneca, Nero\u2019s tutor and closest adviser, encouraged him to free himself of his mother\u2019s influence, he had Agrippina assassinated (he had learnt much from her wicked influence).\u00a0 Nero\u2019s <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">infamous reign is usually associated with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tyrant\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tyranny<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, extravagance and debauchery, although <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Initially, he garnered a reputation for generosity by making closed-door political trials open to the public and encouraging power-sharing within the Senate. Nero had little interest in war and politics and spent his energy on diplomacy, trade and cultural interests.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"wpb_column vc_column_container vc_col-sm-6\" id=\"removeLeftMonPad\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t<div  class=\"wpb_single_image wpb_content_element vc_align_center\">\n\t\t\n\t\t<figure class=\"wpb_wrapper vc_figure\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"vc_single_image-wrapper   vc_box_border_grey\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"vc_single_image-img\" src=\"https:\/\/colosseum.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/20190417_130245-scaled-500x500.jpg\" width=\"500\" height=\"500\" alt=\"20190417_130245\" title=\"20190417_130245\" \/><\/div>\n\t\t<\/figure>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nero loved the games, as well as Greek theatre and performance; he indulged his artistic passions, playing the lyre and singing at private events. He also trained as an athlete and was obsessed with charioteering from a young age even competing publicly as a charioteer.\u00a0 Loved by the people for his generosity and lavish games, he was not liked by the political elite.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><!-- Row Backgrounds --><div class=\"upb_color\" data-bg-override=\"0\" data-bg-color=\"\" data-fadeout=\"\" data-fadeout-percentage=\"30\" data-parallax-content=\"\" data-parallax-content-sense=\"30\" data-row-effect-mobile-disable=\"true\" data-img-parallax-mobile-disable=\"true\" data-rtl=\"false\"  data-custom-vc-row=\"\"  data-vc=\"5.5.2\"  data-is_old_vc=\"\"  data-theme-support=\"\"   data-overlay=\"false\" data-overlay-color=\"\" data-overlay-pattern=\"\" data-overlay-pattern-opacity=\"\" data-overlay-pattern-size=\"\"    ><\/div><div class=\"vc_row wpb_row vc_row-fluid spcl-padding vc_custom_1602921493641\"><div class=\"wpb_column vc_column_container vc_col-sm-12\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\"><div class=\"vc_row wpb_row vc_inner vc_row-fluid vc_custom_1592543913548\"><div class=\"wpb_column vc_column_container vc_col-sm-12\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner vc_custom_1592544019116\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"about\">\n<h4>The Great Fire<\/h4>\n<hr \/>\n<\/div>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 64 AD a fire started in the shops at the Circus Maximus, which raged for almost a week destroying two thirds of the city of Rome.\u00a0 Nero took advantage of the situation and built himself an enormous pleasure palace; which stretched across three hills of Rome, this fuelled rumours that Nero was responsible for the destruction.\u00a0 Whether or not this was true, Nero blamed the small population of Christians for the fire and ordered their persecution: It is during these persecutions that Peter and Paul were executed at Nero\u2019s stadium (now marked by <\/span><b>St Peter&#8217;s Basilica<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) at the Vatican.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nero exhausted Rome\u2019s coffers with his reconstruction of the city.\u00a0 His <\/span><b>Domus Aurea<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or Golden House took a huge area of public land, the palace was surrounded by parkland with a lake the size of five football fields. Next to the lake he set up a 100-foot-tall bronze statue of himself as the sun god Helios, known as the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Colossus Neronis<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><b>colossus of Nero<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). The Roman Empire was strained and, after failing to respond to revolts and unrest, Nero was declared an enemy of the people. He attempted to flee but upon learning of his imminent execution, he took his own life.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nero\u2019s reign would become known for debauchery, anti-Christian persecution and the misrule of Rome.
