The name is often confused with the nearby <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Domus Augusti,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the House of Augustus.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Domus Augustana was built by Rabirius between 81 and 92 AD.\u00a0 <\/span><b>Rabirius used water and coloured marble in enormous quantities for the palace but also decorated lavishly in gold<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0 The aspect that impressed the most was the sheer size and height of the space.\u00a0 Grandeur like this was reserved for the Gods but Domitian flaunted himself as a living god \u2013 probably the reason for his assassination only four years after the palace was completed.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"wpb_column vc_column_container vc_col-sm-6\" id=\"removeLeftMonPadB\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t<div  class=\"wpb_single_image wpb_content_element vc_align_left\">\n\t\t\n\t\t<figure class=\"wpb_wrapper vc_figure\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"vc_single_image-wrapper   vc_box_border_grey\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"vc_single_image-img\" src=\"https:\/\/colosseum.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Domitians-palace.jpg\" width=\"500\" height=\"307\" alt=\"Domitians palace\" title=\"Domitians palace\" \/><\/div>\n\t\t<\/figure>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"vc_row wpb_row vc_row-fluid spcl-padding\"><div class=\"about container wpb_column vc_column_container vc_col-sm-12\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\"><div class=\"vc_row wpb_row vc_inner vc_row-fluid\"><div class=\"wpb_column vc_column_container vc_col-sm-12\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"about\">\n<h4>The Private residence<\/h4>\n<hr \/>\n<\/div>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Domitian\u2019s private quarters were located in a courtyard complex built around yet another peristyle garden. There were two levels: the upper level (where modern visitors look down from) was accessed by a large two-flight staircase and contained the many residential rooms of the emperor; the lower level courtyard was actually below ground and contained a large fountain surrounded by dining areas with miniature pools to refresh diners.\u00a0 <\/span><b>The central fountain has a motif of four <\/b><b><i>peltas<\/i><\/b><b> (the shields used by the famous female Amazonian warriors).<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0 Frescoes adorned the walls and the courtyards and columned porticoes were covered in exquisite marble, statues decorated the fountain and the portico.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The exedra, was a curved gallery on the southwest side of the Domus Augustana which overlooks the <\/span><b>Circus Maximus (ARome\/ARome\/Circus Maximus)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (visitors can enjoy the view from this platform today).\u00a0 With the Aventine Hill in the background and the Tiber river off to the right, the view from the imperial palace was breath-taking. High above the riotous crowds, from the comfort of his own residence, <\/span><b>the emperor could cheer along with the riotous fans below<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as the charioteers raced the track of the Circus Maximus.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><!-- Row Backgrounds --><div class=\"upb_color\" data-bg-override=\"0\" data-bg-color=\"#ededed\" data-fadeout=\"\" data-fadeout-percentage=\"30\" data-parallax-content=\"\" data-parallax-content-sense=\"30\" data-row-effect-mobile-disable=\"true\" data-img-parallax-mobile-disable=\"true\" data-rtl=\"false\"  data-custom-vc-row=\"\"  data-vc=\"5.5.2\"  data-is_old_vc=\"\"  data-theme-support=\"\"   data-overlay=\"false\" data-overlay-color=\"\" data-overlay-pattern=\"\" data-overlay-pattern-opacity=\"\" data-overlay-pattern-size=\"\"    ><\/div><div class=\"vc_row wpb_row vc_row-fluid spcl-padding\"><div class=\"about container wpb_column vc_column_container vc_col-sm-12\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\"><div class=\"vc_row wpb_row vc_inner vc_row-fluid\"><div class=\"wpb_column vc_column_container vc_col-sm-6\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner vc_custom_1602993136680\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t<div  class=\"wpb_single_image wpb_content_element vc_align_left\">\n\t\t\n\t\t<figure class=\"wpb_wrapper vc_figure\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"vc_single_image-wrapper   vc_box_border_grey\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"vc_single_image-img\" src=\"https:\/\/colosseum.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/Stadium-of-Domitian_Palatine-Hill_Rome-500x500.jpg\" width=\"500\" height=\"500\" alt=\"Stadium of Domitian_Palatine Hill_Rome\" title=\"Stadium of Domitian_Palatine Hill_Rome\" \/><\/div>\n\t\t<\/figure>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"wpb_column vc_column_container vc_col-sm-6\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"about\">\n<h4>SO_CALLED STADIUM OF DOMITIAN<\/h4>\n<hr \/>\n<\/div>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The sunken so-called stadium 10 metres below the accessible level is located on the eastern side of the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Domus Augustana<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0 It is also known as the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Circus Agonalis<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stadio Palatino<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, so called because archaeologists assumed races were held here due to the similarity in shape to a stadium.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The sunken garden, also designed by the architect Rabirio, was an elongated rectangle, straight on its northern side, curved to the south. It was surrounded by a two-storey colonnade with frescoed walls.\u00a0 While the precise function of the stadium remains unknown, the remains of a large oval water feature suggests it was a private garden.\u00a0 Plutarch tells us Domitian walked \u2018rain or shine\u2019 in his private garden which was landscaped with walkways, flower beds, and precious statues;
