{"id":1192,"date":"2020-06-10T11:13:43","date_gmt":"2020-06-10T11:13:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/colosseum.info\/?page_id=1192"},"modified":"2020-10-18T03:54:35","modified_gmt":"2020-10-18T03:54:35","slug":"palace-of-septimus-severus","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/colosseum.info\/fr\/palace-of-septimus-severus\/","title":{"rendered":"PALAIS DE SEPTIMUS SEVERUS"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"vc_row wpb_row vc_row-fluid spcl-padding notopP\"><div class=\"about container wpb_column vc_column_container vc_col-sm-12\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\"><div class=\"vc_row wpb_row vc_inner vc_row-fluid\"><div class=\"wpb_column vc_column_container vc_col-sm-6\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"about\">\n<h4>DOMUS SEVERIANA<\/h4>\n<hr \/>\n<\/div>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Domus Severiana<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>was the final expansion of the Palatine\u2019s imperial palaces<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> made by <\/span><b>Septimius Severus<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, he extended the palace behind Domitian\u2019s stadium.\u00a0 The brick remains of the palace can be found on the south-eastern side of the Palatine Hill and, although stripped of their extravagance, still stand with awe inspiring majesty.\u00a0 These are the most striking views of the Palatine from the Aventine or Circus Maximus immortalised in photographs and on postcards.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"wpb_column vc_column_container vc_col-sm-6\" id=\"removeLeftMonPad\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner vc_custom_1602993272313\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t<div  class=\"wpb_single_image wpb_content_element vc_align_center\">\n\t\t\n\t\t<figure class=\"wpb_wrapper vc_figure\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"vc_single_image-wrapper   vc_box_border_grey\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"vc_single_image-img\" src=\"https:\/\/colosseum.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/DOMUS-SEVERIANA.jpg\" width=\"236\" height=\"214\" alt=\"DOMUS SEVERIANA\" title=\"DOMUS SEVERIANA\" \/><\/div>\n\t\t<\/figure>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<p><b>Septimius Severus was the first African to become emperor<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, The son of an equestrian from the Roman colony of Leptis Magna (Libya), he was emperor from 193 to 211 AD. At the time he was governor of Upper Pannonia (today Austria and Hungary) and commander of the largest Roman army on the Danube, his troops named him emperor. He founded the <\/span><b>Severan dynasty<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and converted the government into a military monarchy, giving more power to the military and ignoring the senate.\u00a0 His reign marks a critical stage in the development of the absolute despotism that characterized the later Roman Empire.\u00a0 His descendants were ousted one after another and reigned for no more than a few years each until the Severan reign ended in 235 AD<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Severus made a number of extensions to the<\/span><b><i> Domus Augustana<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, further extending the reach of the Palatine.\u00a0 He used the existing baths of Domitian to build an <\/span><b>enormous imperial terrace <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">which allowed him and his guests an unencumbered view of the chariot races and events in the <\/span><b>Circus Maximus below<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and built the exedra we see today on the side of Domitian\u2019s stadium\/garden and the Severan baths behind.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"vc_row wpb_row vc_row-fluid spcl-padding\"><div class=\"about container wpb_column vc_column_container vc_col-sm-12\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\"><div class=\"vc_row wpb_row vc_inner vc_row-fluid\"><div class=\"wpb_column vc_column_container vc_col-sm-6\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t<div  class=\"wpb_single_image wpb_content_element vc_align_center  vc_custom_1602993218953\">\n\t\t\n\t\t<figure class=\"wpb_wrapper vc_figure\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"vc_single_image-wrapper   vc_box_border_grey\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"vc_single_image-img\" src=\"https:\/\/colosseum.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Septizodium.jpg\" width=\"474\" height=\"279\" alt=\"Septizodium\" title=\"Septizodium\" \/><\/div>\n\t\t<\/figure>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"wpb_column vc_column_container vc_col-sm-6\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"about\">\n<h4>THE SEPTIZODIUM<\/h4>\n<hr \/>\n<\/div>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to sources the most impressive structure he commissioned was the<\/span><b><i> Septizodium<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; a majestic nymphaeum-fa\u00e7ade with columns and fountains on several levels, built on the south-eastern side of the hill in 203AD. It was a scenic entrance to the palace, a monumental water structure, which may have contained the statues of the seven planetary deities of Saturn, Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter and Venus (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">septizodium<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> means sevens suns). Ancient sources say it was <\/span><b>intended to impress Severus&#8217; fellow north Africans as they entered the city, on the Via Appia.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Other examples of septizodia are known, all from Africa. Ancient sources say the majestic building was a popular meeting place for some time.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nothing remains of the structure except some brick stumps and it is only known from Renaissance drawings.\u00a0 In 1588, during the reign of Pope Sixtus V, the eastern facade of the building was demolished for numerous building works.\u00a0 <\/span><b>Rodolfo Lanciani, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">an Italian archaeologist traced more than ten buildings and monuments with stone from the Septizodium;
