The Vestal Virgins<\/h4>\n<hr \/>\n<\/div>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element \" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<p><b>The Temple of Vesta <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was one of the oldest temples on the forum.\u00a0 Little remains of the small round temple, what we see today was rebuilt in the early 20th Century, the only surviving image we have of it is on coins and a sculptural relief in Florence.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What does remain is the <\/span><b>House of the Vestal Virgins<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which is a lovely spot on the forum to visit.\u00a0 It was a closed apartment block with three apartments on each side, surrounded by a covered portico with marble columns.\u00a0 At one end a large space perhaps communal quarters and at the other end a small bathing complex.\u00a0 In all there are six apartments with two levels, rebuilt by Nero after the fire of 64AD, the Vestals lived in luxury at the centre of the Forum.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"wpb_column vc_column_container vc_col-sm-6\"><div \/>\n<\/div>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element \" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<p><b>Vesta <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was <\/span><b>the virgin goddess of the hearth, home, and family<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Roman religion and one of the oldest religious institutions of Rome.According to Roman legend <\/span><b>Rhea Silvia the mother of Romulus and Remus was a vestal Virgin<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0 Her worship seems to have come from <\/span><b>Alba Longa<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> where the twins originated (originally a settlement of Aeneas after his escape from the Trojan war).\u00a0 Legend had it that Aeneas brought a sacred flame from Troy.\u00a0 She was rarely portrayed as a goddess but as a flame, representing the hearth of the home which sustained and protected the family.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the ancient world, fire was not readily available and so the presence of constantly burning hearth was a necessity in both private and public spaces.\u00a0 The sacred flame was kept in the <\/span><b>Temple of Vesta<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, looked after by the <\/span><b>Vestal Virgins<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; sacred priestesses that dedicated themselves to maintaining her flame.\u00a0 It was believed if the sacred flame of Vesta went out that <\/span><b>the city of Rome would fall<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, therefore the Temple and the Vestal virgins were of vital importance to Rome.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element \" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although Vesta had been worshipped since the early days of Rome, <\/span><b>with Christianity the cult of Vesta died out<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and was finally <\/span><b>banned by Theodosius I in 394 AD<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, along with other non-Christian cults.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><!-- Row Backgrounds --><div class=\"upb_color\" data-bg-override=\"0\" data-bg-color=\"#ededed\" data-fadeout=\"\" \/>\n<\/div>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element \" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In order to care for the flame, the sacred priestesses had to remain pure and so were required to swear a vow of chastity.\u00a0 There were six vestal virgins, <\/span><b>chosen between the ages of 6 and 10 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">by the chief priest, or <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pontifex maximus<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, later by the emperor. The Vestals served the cult of Vesta for 30 years after which, in theory, they could marry although many chose not to.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There were <\/span><b>strict criteria for the selection of a priestess of Vesta<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, they must be from a family of good-standing with Roman parents, both still living. The girls were inspected for any imperfections like speech impediments or physical disabilities.\u00a0 Once the Vestals left their family home, they were no longer associated with their family; their fathers had no authority above them; they answered only to the high priest. Literary and epigraphic evidence indicates that individual Vestals owned slaves and property.\u00a0 On many occasions these \u2018gifts\u2019 were necessary to convince families to offer candidates.\u00a0 Augustus granted the Vestals the supreme honour as the only women to sit right at the front of the theatre and gladiatorial contests.\u00a0 They had the privilege of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sacrosanctitas<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (sacrosanctity) \u2013 protection from physical harm.\u00a0 A lictor \u2013 like a private bodyguard went before them in public spaces and on festival days they could travel in a closed carriage.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><!-- Row Backgrounds --><div class=\"upb_color\" data-bg-override=\"0\" data-bg-color=\"#ededed\" data-fadeout=\"\" data-fadeout-percentage=\"30\" data-parallax-content=\"\" data-parallax-content-sense=\"30\" data-row-effect-mobile-disable=\"true\" data-img-parallax-mobile-disable=\"true\" data-rtl=\"false\"  data-custom-vc-row=\"\"  data-vc=\"5.5.2\"  data-is_old_vc=\"\"  data-theme-support=\"\"   data-overlay=\"false\" data-overlay-color=\"\" data-overlay-pattern=\"\" data-overlay-pattern-opacity=\"\" data-overlay-pattern-size=\"\"    ><\/div><div class=\"vc_row wpb_row vc_row-fluid spcl-padding\"><div class=\"about container wpb_column vc_column_container vc_col-sm-12\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner \"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\"><div class=\"vc_row wpb_row vc_inner vc_row-fluid\"><div class=\"wpb_column vc_column_container vc_col-sm-8\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner \"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element \" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"about\">\n<h4>A GRISLY END<\/h4>\n<hr \/>\n<\/div>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element \" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because their role was so important to the city, if the Vestals were found to be <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">incestum <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(unchaste) <\/span><b>they were buried alive<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0 The pontifices placed her in a litter and carried her through the city in a solemn procession resembling a funeral.\u00a0 Because the vestals were sacred to the goddess, they were technically tied to the city boundary or <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pomerium<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and so were placed in an underground chamber that had been dug below or perhaps within the walls of the city.\u00a0 When the procession reached the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Colline Gate<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the pontifex maximus and the other priests averted their gaze as the Vestal descended into a chamber with a bed, a burning lamp, and small portions of bread, water, milk, and oil.
