{"id":1232,"date":"2020-06-10T11:45:09","date_gmt":"2020-06-10T11:45:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/colosseum.info\/?page_id=1232"},"modified":"2020-10-23T12:35:20","modified_gmt":"2020-10-23T12:35:20","slug":"cloaca-maxima","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/colosseum.info\/fr\/cloaca-maxima\/","title":{"rendered":"Cloaca Maxima"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"vc_row wpb_row vc_row-fluid spcl-padding notopP\"><div class=\"about container wpb_column vc_column_container vc_col-sm-12\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\"><div class=\"vc_row wpb_row vc_inner vc_row-fluid\"><div class=\"wpb_column vc_column_container vc_col-sm-12\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"about\">\n<h4>Cloaca Maxima<\/h4>\n<hr \/>\n<\/div>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>Cloaca Maxima, the \u2018Great Drain\u2019 is effectively Rome\u2019s oldest, and most important construction<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0 It lies buried beneath the city and the ancient structures of the Roman Forum and beyond, but this drain (originally a stream separating the territory of Romans on the <\/span><b>Palatine <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and the Sabines on the <\/span><b>Quirinal<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) later became a sewer which allowed the city of Rome to function.\u00a0 In the early days the valley of the Roman Forum was a marshland and impossible to build upon.\u00a0 Around 600 B.C. the first kings drained the low-lying area, allowing the ancient Romans to come down from the hills and form a central meeting place and market place that would become the focal point of the city.\u00a0 The great drain continued to serve Rome as the main sewer and still partly functions today.\u00a0 Although we cannot visit the drain it is undoubtedly one of the most impressive early achievements that would allow the expansion of the city of Rome.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"vc_row wpb_row vc_row-fluid spcl-padding\"><div class=\"about container wpb_column vc_column_container vc_col-sm-12\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\"><div id=\"imageDesktopRem79\" class=\"vc_row wpb_row vc_inner vc_row-fluid\"><div class=\"wpb_column vc_column_container vc_col-sm-6\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Cloaca Maxima\u2019s construction is generally attributed to the king Tarquinius Priscus, or perhaps Tarquinius the Superb, it is one of Rome\u2019s first major works of urbanization. Originally an open channel, it followed the natural flow of streams from above the suburra (Monti) and ran all the way to the Tiber. It wasn\u2019t until the 2nd century BC that the Cloaca Maxima was finally covered, thus becoming an underground sewer.\u00a0 The Cloaca Maxima eventually collected all of the waste water from the many public fountains, baths, palaces and private residences which were fed by the aqueducts. This constantly running water served to keep the Cloaca Maxima clear of obstructions and continually helped to remove any waste.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"wpb_column vc_column_container vc_col-sm-6\" id=\"removeLeftMonPad\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t<div  class=\"wpb_single_image wpb_content_element vc_align_left\">\n\t\t\n\t\t<figure class=\"wpb_wrapper vc_figure\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"vc_single_image-wrapper   vc_box_border_grey\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"vc_single_image-img\" src=\"https:\/\/colosseum.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/CLOACA-EXTERNA-500x371.jpg\" width=\"500\" height=\"371\" alt=\"CLOACA EXTERNA\" title=\"CLOACA EXTERNA\" \/><\/div>\n\t\t<\/figure>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<p><b>It is because of the Cloaca Maxima that the Roman Forum exists<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The construction and eventual underground position of the sewer system allowed the central rectangle of the forum to be paved and for permanent structures to fill the area &#8211; prior to its existence, structures were constantly being demolished and rebuilt due to the continual flooding. Occasionally water from the Tiber would wash back into the sewer but Pliny tells us this was no problem thanks to the expert workmanship and also its size.\u00a0 <\/span><b>The great drain ranges from 2.70 m to 4.50 m in height<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, in some places it is wide enough for two cars to pass each other.\u00a0 The drain took a long meandering route and was actually an amalgamation of seven streams or drains.\u00a0 It passes roughly from termini station down beneath Via Cavour today, underneath the <\/span><b><i>Basilica Aemilia <\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">across the forum, under the <\/span><b><i>Basilica Julia<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, under the <\/span><b><i>Forum Boarium<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and eventually out to the river.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><!-- Row Backgrounds --><div class=\"upb_color\" data-bg-override=\"0\" data-bg-color=\"#ededed\" data-fadeout=\"\" data-fadeout-percentage=\"30\" data-parallax-content=\"\" data-parallax-content-sense=\"30\" data-row-effect-mobile-disable=\"true\" data-img-parallax-mobile-disable=\"true\" data-rtl=\"false\"  data-custom-vc-row=\"\"  data-vc=\"5.5.2\"  data-is_old_vc=\"\"  data-theme-support=\"\"   data-overlay=\"false\" data-overlay-color=\"\" data-overlay-pattern=\"\" data-overlay-pattern-opacity=\"\" data-overlay-pattern-size=\"\"    ><\/div><div class=\"vc_row wpb_row vc_row-fluid spcl-padding\"><div class=\"about container wpb_column vc_column_container vc_col-sm-12\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\"><div class=\"vc_row wpb_row vc_inner vc_row-fluid\"><div class=\"wpb_column vc_column_container vc_col-sm-3\" id=\"imageDesktopRem79\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner vc_custom_1602988744064\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t<div  class=\"wpb_single_image wpb_content_element vc_align_left\">\n\t\t\n\t\t<figure class=\"wpb_wrapper vc_figure\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"vc_single_image-wrapper   vc_box_border_grey\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"vc_single_image-img\" src=\"https:\/\/colosseum.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/CLOACA-FORUM-500x500.jpg\" width=\"500\" height=\"500\" alt=\"CLOACA FORUM\" title=\"CLOACA FORUM\" \/><\/div>\n\t\t<\/figure>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"wpb_column vc_column_container vc_col-sm-9\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Visitors to the Roman Forum can still see an entrance to the Cloaca Maxima, under the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Basilica Julia<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> there is a small stairway descending to a green door.
