Like any modern horse-racing venue, tensions were high as fortunes could be made or last in the blink of an eye. While modern-day visitors can only see the remains of the track, a bit of imagination can reveal the glorious days of the Circus Maximus\u2019 past.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to legend, the Circus Maximus was founded in the 6th century BC by the last of the kings.\u00a0 The Circus is Rome\u2019s oldest and largest space.\u00a0 Originally used for the annual <\/span><b><i>Ludi Romani<\/i><\/b><b> \u2018The Roman Games\u2019 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">which included chariot racing and military displays; the stadium also hosted other types of shows for large audiences like grand <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">venationes<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (animal hunts), mass executions and before the colosseum, gladiator contests. \u00a0 As the largest meeting place of the city it was also used for religious and triumphal processions.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"wpb_column vc_column_container vc_col-sm-6\" id=\"removeLeftMonPad\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t<div  class=\"wpb_single_image wpb_content_element vc_align_left\">\n\t\t\n\t\t<figure class=\"wpb_wrapper vc_figure\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"vc_single_image-wrapper   vc_box_border_grey\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"vc_single_image-img\" src=\"https:\/\/colosseum.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Circus-Maximus-500x383.png\" width=\"500\" height=\"383\" alt=\"Circus Maximus\" title=\"CIRQUE MAXIME\" \/><\/div>\n\t\t<\/figure>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At its largest (under Trajan in the 100s AD) <\/span><b>the circus held around 250,000 spectators <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; more than four times than could fit in the Colosseum.\u00a0 The seating sections were 30 m wide and 28 m high with the lower two tiers made of stone and concrete, while the higher tiers were made of wood.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"vc_row wpb_row vc_row-fluid spcl-padding vc_custom_1602937815824\"><div class=\"about container wpb_column vc_column_container vc_col-sm-12\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\"><div class=\"vc_row wpb_row vc_inner vc_row-fluid\"><div class=\"wpb_column vc_column_container vc_col-sm-6\" id=\"imageDesktopRem79\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner vc_custom_1602985442440\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t<div  class=\"wpb_single_image wpb_content_element vc_align_left\">\n\t\t\n\t\t<figure class=\"wpb_wrapper vc_figure\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"vc_single_image-wrapper   vc_box_border_grey\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"vc_single_image-img\" src=\"https:\/\/colosseum.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/CIRCUS-MXIMUS-TRACK.jpg\" width=\"500\" height=\"304\" alt=\"CIRCUS MXIMUS TRACK\" title=\"CIRCUS MXIMUS TRACK\" \/><\/div>\n\t\t<\/figure>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"wpb_column vc_column_container vc_col-sm-6\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The racing track (9 metres below the current level) measured 540 x 80 m and was originally covered in sand.\u00a0 Down the middle of the track was a raised barrier called the <\/span><b><i>spina <\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(still visible) &#8211; this was richly decorated, including an obelisk brought from Heliopolis by Augustus in 10 BC (that now stands in Piazza del Popolo). \u00a0 Much later in 357 AD Constantius I (Constantine\u2019s son) brought another obelisk (the largest in Rome) to add to the decorations (Piazza San Giovanni today).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The 12 starting gates of the race were located at the river end of the circus, the chariots that participated in the races were pulled by teams of horses (ranging from 4 to 12 animals) and were color-coded \u2013 the greens, whites, reds and blues.\u00a0 The aim was to be the first to finish &#8211; to outrun the other chariots or force them onto the central spina or off the track. The chariot races were a dangerous and exciting spectacle, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">everyone had their favourite spot, mostly seated around the turning end where there was a great view of the crashes as the charioteers raced to make the curve.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Victory brought <\/span><b>huge sums of money and popularity for the charioteers <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">who earned roughly 4 times a modern formula-one driver per race, the horses became popular as well.
