{"id":684,"date":"2020-05-20T07:09:11","date_gmt":"2020-05-20T07:09:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/colosseum.info\/?page_id=684"},"modified":"2020-10-17T13:14:42","modified_gmt":"2020-10-17T13:14:42","slug":"catacombs-appian-way","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/colosseum.info\/fr\/catacombs-appian-way\/","title":{"rendered":"CATACOMBES ET LA _VIA APPIA_"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"vc_row wpb_row vc_row-fluid spcl-padding notopP\"><div class=\"about container wpb_column vc_column_container vc_col-sm-12\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\"><div class=\"vc_row wpb_row vc_inner vc_row-fluid\"><div class=\"wpb_column vc_column_container vc_col-sm-12\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner vc_custom_1589958084470\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"about\">\n<h4>CATACOMBES ET LA _VIA APPIA_<\/h4>\n<hr \/>\n<\/div>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The catacombs are l<\/span><b>abyrinths of ancient burials stretching for miles <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">under the modern city that were used by Rome\u2019s early Christians for over two hundred years.\u00a0 A visit to the catacombs takes visitors back to a changing Roman empire and to the beginning of Christianity when these underground labyrinths were used to bury and store the dead.\u00a0 The catacombs are particularly important to the <\/span><b>history of Christian art,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> some of the burial spaces are richly decorated with the first images of old and new testament themes.\u00a0 From a historical perspective visiting the catacombs is a fascinating experience; exploring these tunnels highlights how difficult it must have been to dispose of the dead, we think of the grave diggers and their difficult jobs and the family members who came back to visit their loved ones.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"vc_row wpb_row vc_row-fluid spcl-padding\"><div class=\"about container wpb_column vc_column_container vc_col-sm-12\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\"><div id=\"imageDesktopRem79\" class=\"vc_row wpb_row vc_inner vc_row-fluid\"><div class=\"wpb_column vc_column_container vc_col-sm-6\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner vc_custom_1589958084470\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To visit the catacombs, you have to go slightly out of the centre of the city as they are all located outside the ancient city walls.\u00a0 According to the oldest religious laws of the city, the dead had to be laid to rest outside of the sacred boundary or pomerium which was marked by the city walls, this was the Necropolis (city of the dead). Pagan Romans traditionally cremated their dead and placed the ashes in urns which were put in columbaria, wealthier Romans had over ground grave monuments, some were grand mausoleums.\u00a0 These, like the catacombs later, were all located outside the ancient city walls, dotted around and alongside the main roads that left the city; the bodies of early Christians, pagans and Jews were no doubt mixed together initially, but by the 2<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nd<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> century AD wealthy Romans gave their land outside of the city walls for the burial of the dead.\u00a0 Some of the catacombs in Rome bear the names of these wealthy landowners, like Domitilla and Priscilla.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Catacomb literally means \u2018by the hollow\u2019, many catacombs started life as quarries and the underground caves and tunnels were used for burials later on.\u00a0 Unlike the catacombs in Paris, the Roman catacombs are not constructed out of brick but are dug out of the bedrock of Rome called Tufa.\u00a0 Tunnels and burial niches were cut out of the soft bedrock which hardened over time allowing the burial of bodies.\u00a0 The dead were wrapped in simple cloth or linen, placed into horizontal niches, covered and sealed with either simple terracotta slabs, roof tiles, or marble plaques.\u00a0 <\/span><b> <\/b><\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some of the wealthier burial spaces were plastered and decorated with frescoes.\u00a0 These underground passageways were utilized up until the 5th century, when invading barbarians camped outside the walls made it difficult to leave the city to bury the dead.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0Although legends and urban myths abound, these were burial spaces and likely never used to escape persecution &#8211; all becomes clear on a visit to one of these fascinating complexes.\u00a0 Although archaeologists have found more than 60 catacombs complexes, very few of them are open to the public.\u00a0 The most visited are those found out by the Appia Antica; <\/span><b>San Sebastiano, San Callisto and San Domitilla.<\/b><\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"vc_row wpb_row vc_row-fluid spcl-padding\"><div class=\"about container wpb_column vc_column_container vc_col-sm-12\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\"><div id=\"imageDesktopRem79\" class=\"vc_row wpb_row vc_inner vc_row-fluid\"><div class=\"wpb_column vc_column_container vc_col-sm-6\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner vc_custom_1589958084470\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Appia Antica or Appian Way is the first Roman highway that stretches from the Roman Forum down the entire length of the boot of Italy to Brindisi in the heel, a distance of 400 miles.\u00a0 This first road named after the Roman censor <\/span><b>Appius Claudius Caecus<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, who built it in 312 BC was designed for military purposes during the <\/span><b>Samnite Wars<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> against a tribe to the south of Rome.\u00a0 The roads were built by the military; as they moved out from Roman territory the soldiers laid roads as they went which enabled them to transport supplies, troops and messages quickly.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Roman roads are no mere paving but were constructed with precision engineering.\u00a0 Trenches were dug down as deep as ten meters and filled with layers of sand, gravel and larger stones and then paved over with large basalt blocks that fit together much like a jigsaw.\u00a0 They were built to resist rain, freezing and flooding and were constructed to need as little repair as possible.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"wpb_column vc_column_container vc_col-sm-6\" id=\"removeLeftMonPad\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t<div  class=\"wpb_single_image wpb_content_element vc_align_left\">\n\t\t\n\t\t<figure class=\"wpb_wrapper vc_figure\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"vc_single_image-wrapper   vc_box_border_grey\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"vc_single_image-img\" src=\"https:\/\/colosseum.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Appia-Antica-scaled-500x500.jpg\" width=\"500\" height=\"500\" alt=\"Appia Antica\" title=\"Appia Antica\" \/><\/div>\n\t\t<\/figure>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Labelled the \u2018Queen of Roads\u2019 in antiquity, the via Appia initially connected Rome with Capua (near Naples) and would eventually run to the important port of Brindisi where Roman ships sailed to Egypt and Greece. In 71 BC after Spartacus\u2019 revolt over 6,000 slaves who had fought in the rebellion were crucified along the Appia between Capua and Rome.\u00a0 It is the vast network of roads stretching from Italy that enabled the Romans to conquer and manage a vast empire.\u00a0 At the peak of Rome&#8217;s development, no fewer than 29 great military highways (known as consular roads) radiated from the capital and would eventually interconnect the provinces. Although we may not realise it today many dead straight modern roads across Europe may follow the course of ancient Roman roads if not be paved over them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We have all heard the expression <\/span><b>\u2018All Roads lead to Rome\u2019<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, well indeed they do, it was the emperor Augustus who declared this in 20 BC when he set up the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">miliarium aureum<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><b>golden milestone<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) near the Temple of Saturn in the <\/span><b>Roman Forum<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; this gilded bronze column measured the distances of Rome\u2019s roads.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today the stretch of the Appia Antica close to Rome is in the Appia Antica regional Park &#8211;
