Raphael et la Domus Aurea<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

A new exhibition\u00a0<\/span>opens this year at the\u00a0<\/span>Domus Aurea \u2013 the Golden House of Nero<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span>that will delve into the \u2018grotesque\u2019 style rediscovered by Raphael and other Renaissance artists in the 16th century<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

2020 marks\u00a0<\/span>the\u00a0<\/span>500th anniversary of the death of\u00a0<\/span>Rafaello Sanzio, oth<\/span>er<\/span>wise known<\/span>\u00a0to us<\/span>\u00a0as Raphael.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>To mark the occasion, a number of rooms of the\u00a0<\/span>Domus Aurea<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span>hosts a unique exhibition<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u2018Raphael and the Domus Aurea – the invention\u00a0<\/span><\/b>of grotesque<\/span><\/b>\u2019<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span>tells the story of the discovery of the Golden house and the exquisite fresco decoration inside which had not been seen for over a\u00a0<\/span>millennium<\/span>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

When the Domus Aurea was rediscovered at the end of the 15<\/span>th<\/span>\u00a0century, a number of artists working in Rome\u00a0<\/span>(including\u00a0<\/span>Raphael and Pinturicchio<\/span><\/b>)\u00a0<\/span>lowered themselves with ropes<\/span><\/b>\u00a0into the dark cavernous rooms.\u00a0 The ancient Roman fresco decoration they found would result in an entirely new\u00a0<\/span>style of decorative art characterized by fanciful human and animal forms often interwoven with foliage or similar figures that distort the natural into absurdity, ugliness, or caricature<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Due to their subterranean location, these rooms were called\u00a0<\/span>\u2018<\/span>grottoes,<\/span>\u2019<\/span>\u00a0and the decoration on the walls subsequently was called\u00a0<\/span>\u2018<\/span>grotesque<\/span>\u2019<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Raphael was certainly affected by the decoration he saw, something that becomes clear at\u00a0<\/span>the\u00a0<\/span>Vatican Loggia of Pope Leo X<\/span><\/b>\u00a0as well as the\u00a0<\/span>Loggetta<\/span><\/i><\/b>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span><\/b>Stufetta<\/span><\/i><\/b>\u00a0of Cardinal Bibbiena<\/span><\/b>\u00a0(father to Raphael\u2019s\u00a0<\/span>betrothed)<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0 T<\/span>he\u00a0<\/span>Loggetta<\/span><\/i>\u00a0and the\u00a0<\/span>Stufetta<\/span><\/i>\u00a0were decorated in the antique style first<\/span>, but the most<\/span>\u00a0well known and most influential<\/span>\u00a0\u2013 the\u00a0<\/span>Loggia<\/span>\u00a0at the Vatican\u00a0<\/span>served as the prototype for modern grotesques.<\/span>\u00a0 Later buildings in Rome like\u00a0<\/span>Castel St Angelo<\/span><\/b>\u00a0would be similarly decorated.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

This\u00a0<\/span>multimedia<\/span>\u00a0exhibition, c<\/span>urated by Vincenzo Farinella with Stefano Borghini and Alessandro D’Alessio<\/span>\u00a0will see t<\/span>he\u00a0<\/span>octagonal hall<\/span><\/b>\u00a0and other rooms<\/span>\u00a0of the Domus Aurea brought to life with\u00a0<\/span>animation<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>interactive and multimedia equipment<\/span>\u00a0to superimpose Raphael\u2019s grotesque style onto the walls.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
