Ridley Scott\u2019s movie Gladiator starring Russell Crowe as Maximus with rippling muscles actually doesn\u2019t do too bad a job at portraying the life of a gladiator.\u00a0 Maximus is captured far away from his home and enslaved, sold by slave traders to a gladiator school (managed by Oliver Reed).\u00a0 He impresses his manager and the crowd with his fighting skills, women throw themselves at him and he eventually makes it to Rome to fight where he becomes an overnight sensation.\u00a0 How close to the reality is this?\u00a0 Probably not too far!\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gladiatore<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Latin means swordsman, named after a standard issue thrusting short-sword called the <\/span><b><i>Gladius<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0 Originally used at funerals or <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">munera<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to honour the dead, Gladiatorial combat for entertainment was already popular by the 1<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">st<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> century BC.\u00a0 Over a century later, amphitheatres would be built all over the empire to satisfy the people\u2019s newfound interest in the gladiatorial games.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Who were the gladiators?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Originally, they were <\/span><b>prisoners-of-war, slaves and criminals<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, later even volunteers who were down on their luck or were seeking fame.\u00a0 With its rapid military expansion Rome had a ready supply of prisoners of war &#8211; these men already had fighting experience and so could be trained up in little time to be gladiators.\u00a0 The games were big business and for a <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lanista<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or manager taking an ordinary man and turning him into a gladiator was a waste of time and money.\u00a0 We should think less of fodder for the arena and more of trained, skilled fighters who put on a show much like our boxing, fencing and wrestling today.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"vc_row wpb_row vc_row-fluid spcl-padding vc_custom_1602938384589\"><div class=\"about container wpb_column vc_column_container vc_col-sm-12\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner \"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\"><div class=\"vc_row wpb_row vc_inner vc_row-fluid\"><div class=\"wpb_column vc_column_container vc_col-sm-6\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner vc_custom_1593696277103\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element  vc_custom_1603693670511\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There were several different types of gladiator classified by costume and fighting style, some of the earlier types reflected early enemies of Rome like the <\/span><b>Samnites<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the <\/span><b>Thracians<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, they wore similar armour and used their specific fighting styles. In times of peace the game&#8217;s needed a steady supply of criminals, who had to have powerful physiques and know how to fight.\u00a0 Criminals could be sentenced to the courts or thrown to the beasts; a lesser penalty was to be trained in the Gladiator schools &#8211; being a gladiator gave some hope of survival.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Gladiators were big money like footballers today<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On average men were chosen between 18-20 years old, like our sports stars today, by 30 they were all washed up. A gladiator signed a contract of five years, they won prize money and at the end of their service would gain their freedom (if they weren&#8217;t dead).\u00a0 The <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lanista<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was much like a football manager <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"wpb_column vc_column_container vc_col-sm-6\" id=\"removeLeftMonPad\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner vc_custom_1602986380261\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t<div  class=\"wpb_single_image wpb_content_element vc_align_left   manual_img_wd\">\n\t\t\n\t\t<figure class=\"wpb_wrapper vc_figure\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"vc_single_image-wrapper   vc_box_border_grey\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"889\" src=\"https:\/\/colosseum.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/GLADIATOR-TYPES.jpg\" class=\"vc_single_image-img attachment-full\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/colosseum.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/GLADIATOR-TYPES.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/colosseum.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/GLADIATOR-TYPES-300x260.jpg 300w, https:\/\/colosseum.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/GLADIATOR-TYPES-768x667.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/div>\n\t\t<\/figure>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element \" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">today (they took a cut from the winnings).\u00a0 Gladiators were a valuable commodity; they had to be housed and fed, given armour, trained and attended to by a doctor if they were sick or injured &#8211; think of them like racehorses, an investment.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Training was with wooden weapons and wicker shields that were heavily weighted to build muscle and develop control.\u00a0 Their diet was heavy in carbohydrates like barley and beans to bulk them up &#8211; much like bodybuilders today.\u00a0 The aim was to cover the well-honed muscles with a protective layer of fat; <\/span><b>fatty flesh produces a lot of blood but does little damage<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The gladiators lived in a barracks consisting of single celled rooms surrounding a training arena in the centre.\u00a0 Behind the colosseum part of the <\/span><b>Ludus Magnus<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> still exists, this was the largest of four such training arenas which had a passage that connected to the colosseum.\u00a0 This whole area (today covered by restaurants and posh hotels) was a complex of service buildings built by the emperor Domitian.\u00a0 The complex had four training arenas, an armoury, a hospital, morgue and even a butcher &#8211; the animals were cut up and fed to the other animals or perhaps even to the crowd. Gladiators were taken between 18 and 20, they could expect to live until their mid-twenties if they made it to 30 &#8211; they were all washed up much like our footballers today.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Nobody came here to see hack and slash<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This was just like boxing, wrestling, fencing today. The spectators came to see a good fight, a skilled fight. Ancient Rome was a violent place, this entertainment instilled good Roman values like military prowess, bravery in the face of death and courage on the battlefield.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element \" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like our contact sports today, there was a <\/span><b>referee<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; something we don&#8217;t see in the movie Gladiator!\u00a0 The gladiators fought in pairs that were equally matched; like boxing today, a featherweight would not be paired with a heavyweight!\u00a0 A mosaic from Germany and a funerary relief (at the colosseum) clearly show a referee, unfortunately, we don&#8217;t know the rules, but they were there to make sure no one was harmed too quickly. We know from funerary inscriptions around <\/span><b>one in nine or one in twelve bouts ended in serious injury<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or death.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There were many types of gladiators, the big stars who probably only fought once or twice a year and the lower level gladiators who were more likely to lose their life or be sacrificed for the spectacle \u2013 but in general death wasn\u2019t the point!<\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><!-- Row Backgrounds --><div class=\"upb_color\" data-bg-override=\"0\" data-bg-color=\"#ededed\" data-fadeout=\"\" data-fadeout-percentage=\"30\" data-parallax-content=\"\" data-parallax-content-sense=\"30\" data-row-effect-mobile-disable=\"true\" data-img-parallax-mobile-disable=\"true\" data-rtl=\"false\"  data-custom-vc-row=\"\"  data-vc=\"5.5.2\"  data-is_old_vc=\"\"  data-theme-support=\"\"   data-overlay=\"false\" data-overlay-color=\"\" data-overlay-pattern=\"\" data-overlay-pattern-opacity=\"\" data-overlay-pattern-size=\"\"    ><\/div><div class=\"vc_row wpb_row vc_row-fluid spcl-padding\"><div class=\"wpb_column vc_column_container vc_col-sm-12\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner \"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\"><div class=\"vc_row wpb_row vc_inner vc_row-fluid\"><div class=\"wpb_column vc_column_container vc_col-sm-6\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner \"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element \" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<p><b>Sports stars and Sex symbols<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Gladiators were well loved like the sports stars and sex symbols of our day.\u00a0 Images of gladiators have been found on lamps, bowls, even a child\u2019s rattle; there were figurines for kids, even gladiator windchimes.\u00a0 For the men in the crowd, the gladiators were something to aspire to, for the women they no doubt had the same appeal as Russell Crowe in his little skirt!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many hired out their services; some emperors used gladiators as personal bodyguards and it appears, they were <\/span><b>popular as playthings for rich lonely ladies<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0 In Pompeii, a female skeleton with expensive gold earrings was found in the barracks, one Senator&#8217;s wife even ran away with a gladiator!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alive or dead they were worth money, their sweat and blood was highly sought after.
